what is deep canvassing?

“Deep canvassing” is a form of door-to-door engagement which is different from conventional get-out-the-vote canvassing, a voter engagement strategy generally relegated to election season. In contrast, deep canvassing isn’t about elections. It’s about creating opportunities for community members to enter real conversation with each other, exchange stories, and create possibilities to evolve the beliefs underlying our political behavior.

At LA Forward Institute, we see many benefits to investing in deep canvassing as a regular practice. For too many of us, our desire and capacity to simply talk with one another – let alone be in true dialogue with each other – is atrophying. History has given us real reason to be afraid of each other. While we can’t instantly undo the harm and violence suffered by many of our communities, we are losing ground to an increasingly polarizing world, one eager for us to shun any neighbor who does not already see the world in the same way we do. Our inability to enter conversation with each other could poison our very chance at democracy.

Deep canvassing offers a practice to counter this inertia. The premise of deep canvassing relies on the possibility that strangers can humanize rather than pathologize each other. Deep canvassing believes that if we can create space for conversation about key life experiences, that we might begin to understand – and bridge – different perspectives that currently divide us. When we practice curiosity with those who might have different political beliefs – and create opportunities for them to do the same in return – we can strengthen our abilities to stay in challenging dialogue and mutually walk away with new insights to inform our civic engagement.

While deep canvassing itself is not a direct intervention upon the systems and policies that maintain injustice, it is a practice that can foster habits of civic engagement and give rise to systemic change.

Are you ready for it?

With the support of our community of members, LA Forward Institute is launching its first Deep Canvassing Academy, a cohort-based opportunity to practice deep canvassing skills and build a community of people committed to making deep canvassing a more regular part of our ecosystem of civic engagement in LA.

The cohort will bring together 25-30 participants from across LA County to develop and practice deep canvassing this summer on the Westside of LA. In addition to building muscle in deep canvassing and stirring important dialogue across Westside communities, we intend for this cohort to be a training ground for those committed to bringing deep canvassing efforts outside of the Westside, into their own communities. Therefore, we encourage community members who are able to commit to this academy to apply, regardless of where they call home.

Selected participants must be able to commit to the following dates, from 10am-4pm on each date:

  • Saturday, July 26

  • Saturday, Aug 9

  • Sunday, Aug 17

  • Saturday, Aug 23 and Sunday, Aug 24

  • Saturday, Sept 6 and Sunday, Sept 7

  • Saturday, Sept 20

We know this is an immense commitment in the summer, and therefore are committed to ensuring that we offer food and drink on the days we are meeting/canvassing. Additionally, we are working on a plan to provide modest stipends to applicants who may benefit from them, as a way to offset lost income, dependent costs, and transportation.

APPLYING

We don’t underestimate the challenges inherent in practicing deep canvassing – physical, emotional, intellectual, and perhaps even spiritual. We want to help community members interested in developing this set of skills to rigorously self-reflect on their readiness for this experience before applying.

To that end, ALL APPLICANTS will be REQUIRED to attend ONE of the following in-person informational sessions as part of the application process. At these informational sessions, each prospective applicant will “try on” some of the skills called upon in deep canvassing efforts, helping them to better understand their readiness for this summer effort. Please register for the informational session of your choice below:

  • Tuesday, May 27, 6-8pm - Central LA. RSVP here.

  • Sunday, June 1, 3-5pm - Mar Vista. RSVP here.

  • Wednesday, June 4, 6-8pm - Sherman Oaks. RSVP here.

We will have refreshments at each of these although no stipends are offered for participating in info sessions.
